On September 24, 2017, the Forum “Boundary of design” was successfully held at courtyard No.7 at Drum Tower / RSAA Beijing Office.Seven Artists and Designer was being invited as guests - Yi Bing(Artist, director and curator), Xing Chen (Founder of Bifu), Guqi Gao (Founder of Fanji furniture ), Jiutai Li (Founder of Tangen Design) Wen xiang Su (Artist, Curator of Taikang Space), Chao Yin (Fashion photographer), Ziyu Zhuang (Partner of RSAA) had a public discussion about the boundary of design. The forum is released simultaneously online through live show In the forum, the guests started from their own career of design and art creation, expressed their interpretation and cognition around the topic”Boundary of design” with vivid stories.

Ziyu Zhuang said: " It was from last year that we start to think about doing this. The original idea was actually about spatial presentation. The construction on this site(the roof space) has just completed. The roof space itself can serve as a carrier to realize this form of forum.Like a martial arts film, there will be dialogues,argument,discussions. Designer is in the pursuit of the form, but the content is actually indispensable,as well as functional expression. Today's topic is "Boundary of design " ,there may be a bit problem, instead we can change it to the boundary of creation. I particularly hoped to hear everyone's thoughts and interpretations on this occasion. "

Yi Bing: "I've been living in the Drum Tower and I just moved away from this place last year. So when we are at this space, we may consider about how should people live their life here instead of the design itself. So the life I treasure most is not elegant life ,on the opposite, I appreciate the life of sitting on the roof, spend my time off the ceiling. I often say that the most precious life is riddled and rough. So, thinking about design from this perspective, I do not think the so-called design can create beauty, I even disagree that beauty can be designed. Beauty can only be felt and found. The value of design is to recall us those things that cost not even a penny but earn our concern. The greatest talent of mankind is not creation, but love, but unfounded、 unflinching、 innocent、 pure heart of love that we have towards the world at the very beginning. "

Xing Chen: "I have a background in architecture before studying in Milan and beginning my career in fasion design. I did a lot of work related to heritage protection, so I have much feelings on in the old city, old urban fabric and such space. Designers differencaited from artists, are dealing with material Unlike writers or musicians who express themselves in a more abstract carrier. The material expression can not be separated from the sense of formality. How to understand the sense of form? It is the imagined form, is a container of memories, the association,awakes our previous memories and emotions.It also shows the materialized embodiment of the changes of our lifestyles. The design embodies the user's demand for functions through the formal way. So I think it is a release of potential energy, the boundary of design, at least to achieve a certain amount of energy release.

Chao Yin : "Photography, from my point of view ,is certainly a design, a way of expression. At the same time I began to do photography, I began to ask myself why to do it. what is the motivation behind it. The idea has been extended to the present.I regard myself not just a photographer. The camera is a sword, a gun, I hope I can capture the soul and the story behind through the camera. We need to go to lead this person, tell him who he is, what he need to do. Designers also need to feel empathy,The carrier is different, but they all are ways of self-expression. Everyone has their own personality. That’s also an expression of our own gene . So I think design itself is not difficult, we must first find ourselves, that’s the most difficult part.

Guqi Gao: "I guess, are the roofs of many special shops going to be like this - You can see the surrounding houses, looking at the world from the aerial view , which is the perspective of architects. I have done interior design. However, interior design and architectural design look at the issue from different perspectives ,so the discovery is not the same .I have some straight feelings related to today’s theme.Now I can keep doing the furniture, and I have a clear plan towards the future, I do not know whether Fanji will be a century-old brand or not, but I will be a lifetime furniture designer, I enjoy doing furniture, and I never thought of doing something to subvert the society, or doing epoch-making things, any work is heritage, influenced by others more or less. I think it's easy to understand my works, they do not have much melody. "

Jiutai Li: "To design with a very sincere attitude, to completely treat the feelings of their own heart's appeal. To perceive the design from a sensual point of view, can make you feel secure, to achieve enjoyment, we should go after it, instead of starting entirelyl from a rational point of view. "

Wenxiang Su: "I have relationship with design, I did graphic design before, which I was compelled to choose, and my related experience is to fight with the border..With a strong desire of design and intention of intervening the world, I later became a curator, many of the art exhibitions in this area are not what I want to see, I have to do the exhibitions I want to do. I think for many issues, if I do not operate by myself, meanwhile, the result of others work are not satisfying, then I have to rush ahead and do what I want myself. I think for a good curator, what they need to break, whether of ways of thinking or of ways of operating, are the same with artists. I pay much efforts on each single curation.  I also want to break through myself, since I am a curators, I should do it with my point of view. "
